When My:Sensations, Emotions & Thoughts Seem Like A Burden… |

The Instructor says: “Notice 3 Breaths.”I see my brain begin to immediately think about breathing. I hear my brain start to count 1, 2, 3 (before the Body even has finished 1 breath). I feel my throat and lungs tighten up and my brow furrow as an unconscious belief shows up - that I need to control my breathing that has been happening all day without my intervention. And I wish to Notice ALL of this simultaneously with No Judgement.
It has been years of exploring the activity of “Noticing” and I am more and more in love with Noticing than ever before. Because… When I learn How to Notice, I expand my ability to participate in Being Human. And Being Human is an amazingly important gift. There are so so many possibilities that arrive when I experience this gift of Interaction as a Human.
We are designed to experience Free Will.
We are made to Interact with our: Community, Earth, God and Own Self in a harmonious way. Interaction and Noticing and Participating are the actual Natural State. Isolation, and to be clear, I am not meaning quiet time or alone time or a debate on Introvert/Extrovert/Ambivert - No - Isolation is where all things begin to break down. In this issue of Response-Ability Digest, I want to explore one part of Noticing. I alluded to it a bit above… The relationship to: Our own Bodies So I ask Myself… How often do I experience natural Sensations in the Body as a burden? As if the mind is being tasked with an unmanageable employee… How often do I have an Emotion and try as hard as I can to run in the opposite direction? Is it really easier to begin an addiction (either healthy or unhealthy) than to feel sad? How often do I fight with my Thoughts? As if an uprising has occurred and one thought could beat another for majority rule?
Here is the not a Secret - Secret…I can be SET Against or SET Up with these 3:
I am SET Against them when I Isolate them and Judge them. I am SET Up with them when I begin to Notice them. Dear Precious One reading this…
Remember when you are caught to 1 of the 3 in Isolation (and you will become caught at different moments in life), remember: You are an amazing, beautiful gift of a Human and it is Safe to feel and think because all 3 of these are undoubtably supported. You are supported and not ever-ever alone even when you feel alone. These are not things that are attacking you. I promise. These are things to Learn How to Notice. To Learn How to Interact with and to Learn How to Listen to and Support. Bringing each of these 3 out of Isolation and into Participation is a skill set to acquire. It is part of this gift of not being a robot but a vital human with all of the highs and lows together! If you notice that you’re feeling lost to isolation, get support!!! Whichever path you choose - choose it! I am on your team, as a Human that is Learning to BE with all the components I am learning how to be SET Up with my relationship to this body, mind and feelings. So… Here’s the invitation: Let’s all Become Human Together.

Practical Application:For this month… Want to practice something together that will most definitely begin to support you to move out of Isolation and into a Fuller and Richer life experience? Ok then. This month pick 1 mundane thing that you do Every Day (I’ll list some examples, but please find your own that works for your rhythm):
And… Every day when you do this task Notice the Body Is Breathing for 3 Breaths. Now commit to this 1 thing in a purposeful way. New neural pathways grow with Intention!

SERIES: I am Not a Scientist - But I’m Learning Science ThingsUnderstanding Afferent & Efferent Pathways are as Important as Knowing North from South |
Last year, a very close friend was getting married in New Mexico. I currently live in Pennsylvania. In order for me to attend the wedding, I had to have an understanding of what direction I would be traveling and how to listen to and follow the prompts from good old Google Maps since I was driving there. A quick look at the map and you’ll notice that PA is North and East of NM. What if I wasn’t able to discern this directional information? What if I misinterpreted the directional cues? Would I have made it there? Would I have made it home? Oooooh boy… Well, thank goodness I had the ability to listen to and follow through on the instructions cuz that was one of my most joyous memories from 2021. What does that have to do with Afferent and Efferent Neurons? These pathways of the Central Nervous System (CNS) are where all the information travels from the Body to the Brain and the Brain back to the Body. They help us know what action to take for the incoming stimuli. For example: I feel cold. My Afferent neurons tell my CNS (and therefore my Brain & Spinal Cord) that I am cold. Now my Efferent neurons send back a message for my muscles to go put a sweater on! And we are all set and cozy! Yay!!! Great job guys!!! But….. What if my cute little Brain didn’t know how to listen to the Afferent information coming in? What if my Brain received the Afferent Info and it looked in the files associated with that stimuli and it said: Cold?!!! COLD?!!!! Ohhhh NOOOOO!!! The last time you were cold this thing happened that was scary and sad. COLD = DANGER!!!! Runnnnn!!!! And then that cute little Brain of mine sent down lots of adrenaline and cortisol because it thought Cold = Danger! So then I felt a rush of what I’ll call Anxiety and I think to myself: Ahhhhhhh!!!! I feel horrible, this is scary!!! Maybe I’m dying? Maybe I don’t like my roommate? What’s happening?!!! Ok… So here is the thing that my clients and I work on in session… Beginning to understand and interpret the Afferent Information traveling to that cute Brain and beginning to sort out of the stimuli is dangerous or if it is safe. Through this process of Self-Understanding in Safety & Connection, there is something beautiful that happens. In time, the Brain and the Body begin to understand how to listen to the information traveling on those highways. In that understanding there is a balance that begins to occur internally both mentally, emotionally and physically.
This knowledge can break the cycle of fear and misunderstanding your own beautiful Brain and Body! It can help you travel to and from where you want to go in life. Let’s keep learning to Listen as we Deepen the Learning & Forward the Movement - Together! A Science-y Hug from Your Coach, Alecia |
